Routsouna Waterfall Naxos

Routsouna Waterfall – A Hidden Natural Gem on Naxos

The Routsouna Waterfall is one of the few natural waterfalls on the Greek island of Naxos, located near the village of Keramoti in the island’s mountainous interior. This scenic waterfall is nestled within a lush valley and offers a refreshing and peaceful escape into nature, away from the more touristic coastal areas.

The waterfall lies along the Routsouna stream, which originates in the surrounding highlands and flows down through dense vegetation and rocky terrain. The water cascades down approximately 20 meters (65 feet), forming a small natural pool at its base, which is surrounded by plane trees, ferns, and other greenery. During the spring and early summer months, the waterfall is at its most active, fed by rainfall and melting snow from the mountains.

Reaching the Routsouna Waterfall requires a short hike. The most common route starts from Keramoti, a traditional village with stone-built houses and narrow alleys. The hiking trail is about 2 kilometers long and follows the stream through a small gorge. It is well-marked but can be uneven and slippery in places, so good walking shoes are recommended. The walk takes about 45–60 minutes one way and is considered moderate in difficulty but the last two minutes are very steep.

The area around the waterfall is part of a more extensive network of hiking paths in central Naxos, and it offers excellent opportunities for nature photography, birdwatching, and peaceful picnics. The Routsouna Waterfall is not commercialized, and there are no facilities on site, which adds to its unspoiled character.

Due to its secluded location and natural beauty, Routsouna is a favorite destination for nature lovers, hikers, and those seeking a different side of Naxos beyond the beaches and historical sites.

Five parking spaces are available at the entrance of the village, where you can begin the hike.
